Big Play for Black Girls | Donate to The Lighthouse Today

I’ve become increasingly aware of the unequal impact giving can have. Not in a typical non-profit sense, rather how very few of us ask questions about the ways the richest among us spend the money they’ve “earned.” Sure, it’s their money. But too many of them are using their money to go to space, the bottom of the ocean, buy positions in government and most recently, buy athletes.

As someone with a front row seat to the struggles young Black women have trying to make it through college, it challenges something in me to see student athletes paid life-changing amounts of money for playing a game. Yes, their labor deserves compensation. However, the payments reflect how money that could change the lives and material conditions of a  community are spent on leisure and entertainment. How do we righteously justify spending billions on athletes and entertainers when mere millions could improve the human condition?

While wealth advisors and budget gurus dole out advice like avoid buying lattes to get rich, we know it’s not that simple. One NIL or basketball contract, though, could likely eradicate homelessness in a star athlete’s hometown. A crocodile Birkin, for example, could fund the freelance budget for our newsletter for a year … or more.

It’s unfair to ask you to carry the weight of the richest among us, but we would like your support. This month, we’re asking you to give and help us reach our $7,500 fundraising goal for February. Your gift will help ensure the 10 young women participants in our Reese|Brooks|Gilbert Collegiate Leadership Initiative have seed money for the community impact projects they start this year. They’re stars in the classroom, community and even intramural sports!

Our connections are deeper than the condition of our communities would have us believe. And $10 from you could make a huge difference. Won’t you consider giving to us, then give? Text GIVELUV to 53-555.
